GOLD® Objectives for Development & Learning, Birth Through Third Grade
The objectives for development and learning address four developmental areas (social–emotional, physical, language, and cognitive) and five content areas (literacy, mathematics, science and technology, social studies, and the arts. A tenth area addresses English language acquisition for English- and dual-language learners.
Our objectives are based on an extensive review of the research and professional literature in the field of early childhood education. They include predictors of school success and are aligned with the Common Core State Standards, state early learning guidelines, and the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework.
Twenty-three objectives show progressions of development and learning. These progressions include indicators and examples based on standard developmental and learning expectations for various age-groups and for classes or grades. The complete picture of the early childhood years that is outlined by the objectives supports teachers to better understand what children know and can do, making it possible to meet children where they are and to clearly see a path for supporting their development and learning now and in the future.
